You don't need to master hue/saturation/lightness to get tasteful palettes. Learn the 60-30-10 rule, complementary/analogous harmony, contrast/accessibility, and quick ways to sample colors and gradients.
Think in HSL, not RGB
HSL is intuitive: Hue is the color family, Saturation the intensity, Lightness the brightness. Keep hue and nudge S/L to build tints and shades of one color.
The 60-30-10 rule
Look at any balanced UI or poster: about 60% dominant (background), 30% secondary (cards/sections), 10% accent (buttons/highlights). A contrasty accent naturally draws the eye.
Classic color relationships
- Analogous: neighbors on the wheel — calm and unified;
- Complementary: opposites — high contrast for calls-to-action;
- Triadic: evenly spaced — vibrant yet balanced.
Don't forget contrast
Text needs enough contrast (aim for WCAG AA 4.5:1 for body). Avoid light text on busy backgrounds; add a scrim or outline when needed. Be colorblind-safe: don't rely on color alone.
